Enrolment in these courses is open to British Columbians 18 years and over who:

  • are unemployed or underemployed
  • are currently employed or underemployed in a sector severely impacted by COVID-19 (retail, tourism, hospitality, etc.)
  • have been referred from an employment, government or social service agency, or a non-profit organization specializing in employment or skills training
  • Own a small to mid-sized business in British Columbia
Skills to Support Independent Living — University of Victoria

Enrolment is open to British Columbians 18 years and over who:

  • are home care aides or similar positions who provide health care and/or social support services for older adults and individuals with disabilities living in their homes.
  • are currently working or seeking employment in the community health care sector.

Business Administration Course

Business Administration Essentials

This Business Administration essential program enables participants to gain key skills to establish a successful foundation for careers in administration and operations, with a focus on increasing leadership abilities, strengthening confidence, identifying strengths and enhancing conflict management and communication skills. The program also focuses on digital literacy and online learning, foundations of operations management, business writing, business finance for non-financial staff, plus MS Office Suite skills. 

Duration: 10-week facilitated online program

Digital Course

Essential Skills for Data Literacy

The Essential Skills for Data Literacy micro-credential teaches fundamental skills required to work effectively with data and business intelligence including how to read, analyze and interpret data sets using a variety of evaluative frameworks; techniques and tools to visualize, report and communicate data findings; and strategies for data-informed decision making and problem solving.

Duration: 8-week online facilitated program
Start Date: Staggered start dates throughout January to March 2021

Environmental Field Assistant Course

Mineral Exploration, Geoscience and Environmental Field Assistant

This program prepares graduates for field assistant positions in mineral exploration, mining and environmental services — and provides a step toward a career in natural resources and environmental management. Students develop field skills such as sampling, field data collection, first aid and field safety, plus knowledge of environmental essentials and mining and Indigenous people. The program also prepares students to take the BC Mines Supervisor Certification exam, a valuable certification required in BC exploration and mining camps.

Duration: 6-week facilitated online program

Supervisory Skills Course

Supervisory Skills

The Supervisory Skills program enables participants to obtain entry or re-entry into mid-level supervisory, administrative and service-oriented positions. Participants gain key skills and techniques to establish a successful foundation in supervision and management. Participants increase leadership abilities, strengthen confidence, identify strengths, and enhance conflict management and communication skills. The program includes digital literacy and online learning, leading with emotional intelligence, managing people and performance, difficult conversations, mindful resilience, foundations of operations management and business writing.

Health Course

Skills to Support Independent Living

Falls are the leading cause of injury for older adults, yet most falls are preventable. The Skills to Support Independent Living micro-credential prepares home- care aides to incorporate fall-prevention strategies and education for clients into regular home-care routines, enabling older adults to live safely in their homes. This program focuses on practical skills that can be applied immediately in learners’ own work settings.

Duration: 3-week online, facilitated program
Start Date: Staggered starts from January 22
to March 26 2021

Leadership Course

Leading Projects in a Digital Environment

This course equips participants with key skills, concepts, tools and techniques required to successfully manage and lead projects, and associated project teams, through an ever-shifting digital landscape. Participants will explore innovative approaches to project leadership and change management and increase their own resilience and adaptability to ever-changing conditions within digital environments.

Workplace Communication Skills

Effective, professional communication skills are essential in today’s workplace.
